Can a woman take zinc supplement during pregnancy?

Generally pregnant women need zinc for the production, repairing and working of DNA and it is a basic building block of cells. So consuming enough amount of zinc is very important for the cell growth that takes place during maternity period. There is a traditional advice for pregnancy women to take zinc supplements, as it helps reduce the danger of pre-term delivery, or low weight baby or even lengthy pregnancy. There are some studies which suggest taking zinc supplementations during pregnancy can interfere with baby’s mental growth.

Most of the doctors recommend 50mg of zinc supplement in a day during pregnancy which must be taken separately without any other minerals like iron. Having zinc supplements up to 200mg in a day is quite safe and it is also good for health but for long period of time, 20mg of zinc supplement in a day is recommended. Most of the maternal vitamin supplement contains adequate amount of zinc.

However, you can get zinc from natural source itself. People who consume meat can get plenty of zinc easily, but if you are a vegetarian it is hard to get zinc, as it is more difficult to absorb zinc from vegetarian diet.
