Can a sodium supplement be harmful? |
Sodium can be found in table salt and it should be consumed in limited proportion throughout the day. Sodium helps in regulating nerve impulses and maintains a proper balance of fluids in body. Sodium is regulated in the body by kidneys and when there is sodium deposition they are thrown out from the body in the form of urine. However excess sodium can result in the development of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Every day four grams of sodium should be consumed by people and not more than that because over consumption of sodium supplements can lead to several dangerous conditions. However a well maintained balanced diet will have plenty of sodium in it so sodium supplements are not needed. But in some cases people suffering from sodium deficiency will require sodium supplements. Hypertension, kidney damage, nausea, coma, feeling of dizziness, kidney stones, vomiting, stomach cramps and upsets, edema, headaches, gout are some of the side effects of sodium supplements. Muscle spasms, chest pain, irritation, allergic conditions such as hives, rashes, redness, feeling of fatigue, weakness are some of the most common side effects associated with sodium supplements. Suppression of respiratory tract, hypochloremia, renal alkalosis, intra ventricular hemorrhage, ulcers, gastric rupture, and mental stupor are some of the other side effects in rare cases associated with sodium supplements. |
