Iron supplements before surgery

Iron is a multi-utility mineral which most importantly regulates the metabolism system and timely transportation of oxygen to all the internal organs of the body. Any sort of a surgical treatment may extremely deplete the iron content in the body and thus make the patient anemic. Therefore, most of the doctors recommend the intake of iron supplements a few weeks before and after the surgery so as to keep the iron stock intact. Moreover, according to several studies and researches, adequate iron supplements in the body helps the body to combat surgical infections that could puncture the body’s defense mechanism system, immune system. This mineral further aids in the generation of new red blood cells.  

However, it is advisable to consult the doctor before taking any random iron supplements on your own lest it reacts with any other medicines taken by you. These supplements should always be taken when the stomach is full or along with a glass of milk. In case, you become constipated, you can take certain over the counter medicines to soften the stool. One may also notice the transformation in the color of stool from lighter to darker tone. One can also add food rich in iron in your diet. For example, oysters, liver and sardines are foods rich in iron.
