What about iron supplements for kids?

Children of different age groups have diverse needs for iron. Infants, till they grow up to 6 months are breastfed, as mother’s milk is regarded as an essential source of minerals, including iron. As the young toddlers become 7 months old, they should be largely given iron fortified cereals as essential preserve of this mineral. Apart from breast milk, the new born should be given iron fortified cereals till they turn one year. Further, those children who do not take mother’s feed should be given special formulas that are rich in iron. It is essential to note that children between the ages of 1-12 years have a daily requirement of 7-10 milligrams of iron on a regular basis. Further, as soon as these kids reach their adolescence, their daily requirement increases to 11-15 milligrams per day. Parents are suggested to increase the presence of iron rich vegetables in their daily diet to meet the regular needs for iron. They should be encouraged to introduce green leafy vegetables as their staple so as to avoid iron deficiencies in the future. Further, animal products like meat, fish and poultry products should be encouraged in your child’s lifestyle. Excessive consumption of animal products should be however discouraged so as to avoid obesity.
