Calcium supplement while nursing |
A nursing women need more calcium than before, 1200 mg. of calcium daily will be adequate. This amount is equivalent to four glasses of milk (less fat). If your calcium consumption falls down then your body will start to use the calcium stored on the bone which leads to weak bones and tooth. The important matter is, if you even intake adequate amount calcium, some loss of bone calcium will take place during nursing period. And also nursing mother secretes very less amount of estrogen hormone which means some amount of calcium will be used up from the bone. The same will takes place during menopause as estrogen levels falls down. Nursing women who don’t have adequate amount of basic calcium also can take calcium supplements. But, it is not advisable, if you have calcium rich food, you don't need any calcium supplements. Many studies have proved that giving calcium supplements to nursing women has caused no affect on their body health or mineral balance. And this is the reason why the amount of calcium supplements is the same for both nursing and non nursing women. Yes! It is 1000mg/day for 20 years old and older women and 1300mg/day for 19 years old or younger girls. |
