Calcium supplement and constipation

Taking calcium supplements and constipation are closely related to each other. Basically there are three forms of calcium supplements are available, calcium citrate, calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate. In point of fact, calcium carbonate is purportedly responsible for keeping down the frequency of normal bowel movements. As this condition continues, it will result in decreased urge of laxation or defecation. If this problem remains for long period of time, then it surely develops into constipation. Calcium supplements also interfere with the intestinal functions and frequently result in the formation of internal gas or bloating. Constipation problem usually occurs if the calcium is not absorbed properly. If you experience this problem with calcium carbonate supplements, it is better to switch to other expensive varieties of calcium supplements such as calcium citrate or calcium phosphate.  

How to prevent constipation due to calcium supplements 

  • Usually over dose of calcium supplements cause constipation. So to prevent this side effect, you can decrease the quantity of calcium supplements. For examples: if you are suppose to have two doses of calcium supplements in a day, just spilt the doses, consume one dose in the morning and one in the evening.
  • During the starting stage of constipation, drink more water, have 10 glasses of water in a day with fresh fruits.
  • Instead of try calcium supplements you can try natural source of calcium such as dairy products.
