Potassium supplement to deal with basic body problems

Potassium supplements are taken when there is a deficiency of potassium in the body and the daily requirements cannot be met by food alone. Potassium is a very important mineral required for the normal functioning of the body. In the absence or deficiency of potassium, several body functions like regulating water balance, blood pressure, and levels of acidity are impaired. Potassium is responsible for carrying out various cellular and electrical functions in the body. Ideally potassium is supplied in the form of common salt. The daily requirements of protein vary with age and gender. For children, 780 to 1600 mg of potassium is required per day where as for adults the value lies between 1600 to 2000 mg per day. Potassium supplements, like any other nutritional supplements, should not be taken without consulting your doctor. Over dosage might lead to toxicity and related problems lie vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal discomfort. Other side effects are slow heart rate, muscle weakness, and irregular heart rhythm. People with kidney failure are advised to avoid potassium supplements under all conditions and should try to get the daily requirement through dietary sources fruits, tomatoes, beans, apricots, peas, broccoli, and green leafy vegetables like spinach.
